GLADSTONE -- Gladstone residents will soon see changes in parking regulations in a part of the city.
New business of the Monday, Dec. 11 regular meeting of the Gladstone City Commission included the approval of a traffic control order that was presented by Public Safety Department Director Ronald Robinson. Currently, vehicles are allowed to park along both sides of South 18th Street with the exception of the block between Marble and Minneapolis Avenues, where parking on the west side of 18th is prohibited. Soon, parking along the west side of 18th will be forbidden for the entire length of the street, from Marble Avenue to Dakota Avenue.
Robinson noted that when cars are parked up and down 18th Street, only one vehicle can drive through at a time, whereas traffic should be able to flow in both directions and allow room for emergency vehicles in the event they are needed. He pointed out that the situation is worst and most noticeable when there are football games at the Marble Athletic Field, which is at the northwest corner of 18th and Minneapolis.
Robinson's proposal was to extend the "no parking" zone for the length of the street. The commission agreed unanimously to approve the Traffic Control Order he had prepared as recommended.
Following the meeting, the documents were signed and filed with the City Clerk. The "No Parking" restriction will be implemented for the length of South 18th Street on the west side only. The order shall take effect immediately upon placement of "No Parking" signs, installation of which will be up to the Department of Public Works. Timing was unknown as of Tuesday.
Other business during Monday's meeting included:
– public comment from Charles and Deanna Kang, owners of Gladstone Storage on North 10th Street. They presented multiple complaints, the most persistent of which involved flooding on their property. Charles also expressed displeasure that the public and the city uses the Kangs' private easement at that location as a turnaround.
– an update on the Jones property on Lake Shore Drive. Gladstone City Manager Eric Buckman reported that the property was appraised and that an attorney is preparing to rewrite the agreement between the city and the property owners in a manner that offers more protection.
– a special event permit for a 5K charity run/walk organized by Gladstone Public Safety and benefitting the Delta Animal Shelter. Robinson reported that the department has raised over $3,000 for the shelter already and hopes to make the 5K an annual event. It is scheduled to be held on Feb. 17 at the beach house, with an alternate route planned in the event of heavy snow.
