ESCANABA -- Delta County will begin charging for Freedom of Information Act requests, following a massive increase in requests in the last year.
According to Delta County Administrator Ashleigh Young, the county is nearing 250 FOIA requests for 2023, up from just over 50 requests in 2021. The rise in requests has meant a rise in costs for the county, as personnel are spending more time searching for documents and redacting information that is not subject to FOIA.
"I am currently working on a FOIA, just for example, that is 1,400 emails that I have to read and redact, when appropriate," Young told the County Board of Commissioners Tuesday.
The county's FOIA policy -- which includes how fees are calculated -- is available on the county's website, deltacountymi.gov.
