GLADSTONE -- A Gladstone Area Schools bus driver has been fired after having a physical altercation with a student.
According to Superintendent Jay Kulbertis, the incident took place Monday during an afternoon run of the bus. The bus driver, who was substituting for another driver, "mishandled a behavior issue" according to a letter sent to parents Thursday.
"The end result is that the sub driver and the student got into a physical altercation. This is inexcusable and completely unacceptable for any adult that is associated with our school district," Kulbertis wrote.
The district is working with Gladstone Public Safety to facilitate an investigation into the incident, and the substitute driver was informed he would no longer be working for the district.
"We hope that you can also help assure your children that we put their safety as our top priority. We apologize for this incident, and we will work hard to earn back the trust of parents and students as we address this issue with all of our staff and substitutes," said Kulbertis.
