Thick smoke prompts evacuation of Escanaba hotel

Ilsa Minor | Daily Press Thick smoke on the third floor of the Escanaba Comfort Suites prompted guests to evacuate Thursday afternoon. No one was injured as a result of the incident. Responding to the fire were Escanaba Public Safety, the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, the Michigan State Police, and Rampart EMS.

ESCANABA — Thick smoke at an Escanaba hotel prompted an evacuation of guests Thursday afternoon and a quick response by Escanaba Public Safety officers. Officers were called to the Comfort Suites, 3600 Ludington Street, shortly before 4 p.m. Persons at the hotel reported smoke inside the building.

When Escanaba Public Safety officers arrived they found the smoke was originating from the third floor of the structure. They entered the building and found thick, black smoke was originating from that floor.

They began attempts to ventilate smoke from the third floor.

A Rampart ambulance was initially called to the scene, but left a short time later after it was not needed.

A handful of people could be observed waiting in the parking lot while officers cleared the building of smoke.
