Suspect in State Police vehicle burning injured in shootout with police

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. — A man suspected of shooting and and setting fire to several Michigan State Police vehicles has been shot and wounded in a shootout with police. The man is being treated at a hospital and is in custody, according to Michigan State Police at the Sault Ste. Marie Post.

This stems from an incident on Wednesday . At approximately 3:15a.m., a suspect driving a silver-colored Honda CRV entered the driveway of the Sault Ste. Marie Post. The man parked his vehicle and exited wearing camouflage. He doused several patrol vehicles with gasoline and set them on fire. After setting them on fire, he produced a rifle from the vehicle and proceeded to fire multiple rounds into and around the patrol vehicles.

After an extensive investigation and multiple tips, a suspect location was found on Riverside Road in Chippewa County. On Thursday at approximately 1:45 p.m., a search warrant was executed by the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team. During the execution of the search warrant, the suspect, a 39-year-old man from Florida, fired gunshots towards troopers at which time troopers returned fire. The man was injured and has been taken by ambulance to My Michigan Medical Center where he is being treated for his injuries. He remains in custody.

No officers were injured. The investigation is active and maximum charges are being sought.

The Michigan State Police is being assisted by the ATF, FBI, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Sault Ste. Marie City Police, Bay Mills Police Dept., Homeland Security Investigation, Sault Tribal Police, Customs and Border Patrol, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Dept, Bruce Township Fire and Kinross E.M.S.
