U.P. jobless rate down in June

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Upper Peninsula jobless rate dipped in June even as the region’s labor force grew by 1.6% from a year ago, according to data released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget.

The unemployment rate of 5.3% in June was down from 5.5% in May and 5.5% in June 2022. The civilian labor force, meanwhile, was estimated at 137,800 in June, up by 1,500 workers over the month and 2,200 over the year.

The statewide unemployment rate climbed to 4.1% in June, up from 3.8% in May but down from 4.4% a year ago. The U.P. was one of four labor market areas in Michigan to display unemployment rate decreases in June, while 13 others had jobless rate advances.

“Most Michigan regional jobless rates saw typical June increases,” said Wayne Rourke, labor market information director of the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics. “June non-farm employment increased across the state.”

Employment gains were seen in most major Michigan industries, especially the leisure and hospitality sector, Rourke said. The state’s total payroll employment rose by 77,000 over the year, or 1.8%.

Delta County had a 5.1 percent jobless rate. The unemployment rate is Schoolcraft County was 6.9 percent.

Mackinac County had the lowest jobless rate in the U.P. in June at 3.5%, followed by Dickinson’s 4.1% rate. Menominee County had the third-lowest rate at 4.5%.

The highest unemployment rate in the U.P. and the state was 8.1% in Ontonagon County. Schoolcraft County had the second-highest U.P. rate at 6.9%, followed by Keweenaw County, 6.8%

The U.S. jobless rate of 3.6% in June was down from 3.7% in May and unchanged from June 2022.
