IRON MOUNTAIN -- Dickinson County was the jobs leader in the Upper Peninsula in May, showing an unemployment rate of 4.2%, the lowest in the region, according to data released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget.
Menominee County was second-lowest at 4.5%, followed by Mackinac and Marquette counties, both at 5%.
The jobless rate in Delta County was 5.2 precent. It was 7.1 percent in Schoolcraft County.
The U.P.-wide not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.5%, compared with 5.4% in April and 5.3% a year ago. The region's civilian labor force grew by an estimated 2,000 workers since April and 3,000 workers over the year, climbing to 136,400.
The U.P. had 7,400 workers unemployed in May, 100 more than in April and 300 more than a year ago.
"Regional jobless rates advanced in May as residents began entering the summer job market," said Wayne Rourke, labor market information director for the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics.
The statewide unemployment rate in May was 3.8%, jumping from 2.9% in April but down from 4.1% in May 2022.
May job gains were mainly seasonal, Rourke said, with most regions showing growth in leisure and hospitality, construction and professional and business services.
The U.P. had the three highest county jobless rates in Michigan in May -- Ontonagon County at 8.7% and Keweenaw and Alger counties, both at 8.2%.
The U.S. jobless rate in May was 3.7%, up from 3.4% in April and 3.6% in May 2022.
