Independence Day celebrations across the local area kick off this weekend. Events are scheduled to take place in Escanaba, Gladstone, Bark River, Powers-Spalding, Manistique, and Hermansville.
ESCANABA
On Saturday, July 1, Ludington Park in Escanaba hosts food and tent vendors from 11 a.m., car show at noon, petting zoo at 4 p.m., live local band performance at the Karas Bandshell from 3 to 7 p.m., te Escanaba City Band at 8:30 p.m., and fireworks at dusk.
HERMANSVILLE
Also on Saturday, events in Hermansville include a parade (kids starting at 11:15 and the rest at 11:30 a.m.) and several activities beginning at noon at the Sportsman's Club and the park at Hermansville Lake. There is a car show, food, music, and mud bog races. Fireworks take place at night.
GLADSTONE
Gladstone's celebration on Tuesday, July 4 begins with the Firecracker Run/Walk, which starts at 7:30 a.m. for kids and 8 a.m. for adults. The parade, this year with the theme of "American Frontier" rolls from 11 a.m. to noon. From then on, Van Cleve Park becomes the site of all other events: log rolling, games for all ages, food trucks, live music beginning at 7 p.m., and more. Fireworks begin at dusk. A rain date is set for the following day, Wednesday, July 5.
BARK RIVER
In Bark River, a parade begins at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 4, starting at Rays Feed Mill. Beginning at noon at Bark River Sports Complex, attendees will find food and refreshments served by the Lions Clubs, games for children, a fire department display, baseball and softball games, pie and ice cream social, and music by the Peltier Brothers. Fireworks begin at dusk.
POWERS-SPALDING
The Powers-Spalding celebration of Tuesday, July 4, starts with a parade at 10:30 a.m., best viewed along US Hwy 41 in Powers. At noon in Veterans Park, the annual truck pulls are accompanied by a fishing derby, kids' games, food, and a farmers' market. For more information, call (906) 450-5791.
In Manistique, a kiddie parade is today, Friday, June 30, and the regular parade is Saturday, July 1. Both begin at 12:30 p.m. with line-up at noon. The fireworks this year will not be until July 8, following the Saturday entertainment at FolkFest.
