ESCANABA — Several communities have farmers’ markets every week throughout the summer, some extending into autumn. These gatherings bring vendors of fruits and vegetables, baked goods, prepared food, art, photography, and handmade crafts.
The Escanaba Marketplace on the corner of Ludington and 15th Streets houses a farmers’ market from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Sold alongside produce are farm fresh eggs, homemade sauces, macarons and other desserts, fishing lures, and numerous crafts. The Downtown Development Authority has recently added a new Pop-Up Market in the same location on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For vendor information, contact Judy by calling (906)789-8696.
The open-air farmers’ market of the City of Gladstone takes place each Monday from 3 to 6 p.m. in Market Square at 907 Delta Ave. In addition to shopping for produce, locally-raised meat, artwork, and more, attendees will also see live music each week. Vendors may apply at gladstonemi.org.
The Rapid River Farmers’ Market is held at the Park Pavilion inside the Masonville Township Park off Cole Street on both Mondays and Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. Popcorn, jam, syrup, fresh bread, freeze-dried snacks, wire-wrapped jewelry and more line the tables under the covered pavilion even on poor-weather days. Thursdays see a greater number of vendors, including fresh fish, says market organizer Rick Bricker, who makes and sells wooden cribbage boards, utensils and decor. Vendors may reach Rick at (906) 241-8910. The market runs until mid-October.
In Manistique, the farm and food market may be found at Little Bear West Arena at 180 N. Maple Street on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. from June through September. Highlights are pies, sourdough bagels, Ayurvedic products, upcycled textiles, and maple syrup. WIC and Senior Project FRESH is accepted for some items at the market.
