Woman charged with murder in Mackinac County

HESSEL — A 34-year-old woman from the east end of the Upper Peninsula has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting a 73-year-old relative Thursday.

Troopers from the St. Ignace Post of the Michigan State Police were called to the scene of the incident, just north of Hessel in Mackinac County, Thursday evening on a report of a disturbance involving a firearm at a residence. When the troopers arrived, they discovered the deceased male victim, with an apparent gunshot wound.

A short time later, the suspect, Joelle Chamberlain, was located just down the road from the scene. According to the Michigan State Police, “numerous indicators” that she was involved in the homicide were observed when troopers made contact with Chamberlain and she was taken into custody.

A preliminary investigation revealed Chamberlain was a relative of the victim and that both individuals were from the Hessel and Pickford area.

Chamberlain has been charged with Open Murder and arraigned in the 92nd District Court. She is currently lodged at the Mackinac County Jail without bond.

The name of the victim has not been released.

Troopers were assisted by the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Department, Sault Tribal Police, Clark Township EMS, and the Michigan State Police Forensic Lab in Grayling.
