Escanaba schools dedicate new tennis complex

Ilsa Minor | Daily Press Above, the pavilion at the new Abrahamson Courts tennis complex at Escanaba Junior/Senior High School is shown. The complex includes four new courts, the new pavilion, four resurfaced courts, and multiple spectator areas with bleachers. A ceremony dedicating the courts was held inside the school’s gymnasium Monday. The courts are the result of a $200,000 donation from Patricia Abrahmson; a $100,000 donation from her son, Jeffery Abrahamson; funding approved by the Escanaba school board, and the work of Tennis Coach Tom Penegor.

ESCANABA — School officials, athletes and members of the community gathered at Escanaba High School Monday to dedicate the school’s new tennis complex. An open house was held, followed by a dedication ceremony.

The complex includes four new courts, a new pavilion, four resurfaced courts, and multiple spectator areas with bleachers. The tennis complex was made possible by generous donations, including significant contributions from Patt Abrahamson and her son, Jeff.

“These courts are a wonderful addition to the community and to Escanaba tennis teams,” said Boys Tennis Coach Tom Penegor. “Previously, when we held tournaments, teams had to use courts around the city. The new courts will allow us to hold all of our matches and tournaments at one location.”

At the open house, individuals and families were invited to view the new courts and enjoyed hot dogs, chips, cookies, and pop in the commons area of the school.

Although the official dedication was today, the new tennis complex has already been in use for tennis matches this spring.
