ESCANABA -- A new downtown event that encourages residents to shop local and have fun doing it will take place tonight in downtown Escanaba.
The first-ever Escanaba Beat will kick off at 6 p.m. on the corner of 13th and Ludington streets with a live sidewalk concert featuring the music of Stonewall. The band will perform until 8 p.m.
At 7 p.m., shoppers are invited to attend a shopping mob event. To participate, shoppers are asked to meet at the corner of 13th and Ludington streets with at least $20 they plan to spend at a local business. Stonewall will announce the downtown business that is the secret shopping mob location of the night. Those participating will then visit the business en masse to spend their $20.
The events, which are sponsored by the Escanaba Downtown Development Authority and named after the 1970s jazz funk tune "Escanaba Beat," will return each month through the summer. Additional sidewalk concerts will be held June 20, July 18 and Aug. 22.
