ESCANABA -- Delta County had the Upper Peninsula's only new confirmed COVID-19 fatality in the past week, even as virus activity declined in the region, according to state health data.
Delta County continues to lead the Upper Peninsula in virus-related deaths at 156 since the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services began COVID-19 tracking in March 2020.
Yet Delta County only had three new confirmed virus positives Tuesday, down nine from April 11, while Menominee County had seven cases, two fewer than the week before, according to figures posted Tuesday on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services COVID-19 website.
The MDHHS website Tuesday added 100 confirmed COVID-19 positives since April 11, down 21 from the previous week: 20 in Houghton and Gogebic counties; 17 in Marquette County; 10 in Chippewa County; nine in Dickinson County; seven in Menominee County; six in Baraga County; five in Ontonagon County; three in Delta County; and one each in Schoolcraft, Keweenaw and Luce counties. Three counties — Iron, Mackinac and Alger — reported no new cases for the week.
Based on the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 64,987 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 998 confirmed deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 606 confirmed cases and 65 probable, and 15 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 791 confirmed cases and 892 probable, 17 confirmed deaths and eight probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,219 confirmed, 150 probable and 42 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,299 confirmed, 879 probable and nine deaths, 12 probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,424 confirmed cases and 828 probable, 15 deaths and six probable; Mackinac County, 1,950 confirmed cases and 1,082 probable, 34 deaths and six probable; Baraga County, 2,182 confirmed cases, 463 probable and 60 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 3,226 confirmed cases and 431 probable, 85 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,691 confirmed cases and 742 probable, 44 deaths and 34 probable; Chippewa County, 4,274 confirmed cases and 6,091 probable, and 99 deaths, 21 probable; Menominee County, 5,027 confirmed cases, 2,254 probable and 69 deaths, 17 probable; Dickinson County, 6,403 confirmed cases and 3,148 probable, 108 deaths and 25 probable; Houghton County, 8,440 confirmed cases, 1,301 probable, 96 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 9,217 confirmed cases and 3,432 probable, 156 deaths and 42 probable; and Marquette County, 15,238 confirmed cases, 4,544 probable and 149 deaths, 27 probable.
The MDHHS on Tuesday added 3,867 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since April 11, down 779 for the week, or an average of about 552 cases per day for the seven-day period, for a total of 3,097,890 cases since COVID tracking began. The state since April 11 recorded 54 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus, 36 fewer than the week before, to reach 42,667.
