Hearing rescheduled for semi-truck driver in fatal crash

L’ANSE — The preliminary hearing has been adjourned for the Illinois man charged with a fatal October semi-truck crash at the Holiday gas station in L’Anse.

Dawaun Johnson’s hearing, which had been scheduled for Tuesday, will now take place April 18. The preliminary hearing had previously been set for December and February before being adjourned.

Johnson, 23, of Highland Park, Illinois, was allegedly behind the wheel when he collided with the station and fuel pumps outside, sparking a fire. He was on the clock for the trucking company CR England at the time.

Al Dantes, who was fueling his vehicle outside, was killed in the crash.

A blood draw conducted about two hours after the crash showed Johnson had a blood-alcohol level of .156, according to a Michigan State Police report.

Johnson faces felony charges of operating while intoxicated – causing death and operating while intoxicated – causing serious injury. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

He is also charged with having an open alcohol container in a vehicle, a misdemeanor.

Johnson’s surety bond is set at $100,000.
