Second house fire in two days in Escanaba

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Public Safety Department responded to the second house fire in the city in two days Tuesday afternoon.

The blaze was reported shortly after 4 p.m. at 400 S. 12th St. on the city’s southside. Witnesses reported smoke coming from the second floor of the building. Once inside, firefighters threw a mattress and box spring from the second story of the home.

The fire was brought under control quickly and firefighters could be seen checking the home for hot spots.

The Ford River Volunteer Fire Department was also called to the scene, along with Rampart and the Red Cross.

Tuesday’s blaze was the second in two days in Escanaba.

The Escanaba Public Safety Department is also continuing to investigate a fire that damaged a home in the city’s southside Monday.

Officers were called to 208 S. 4th St. at 11:08 a.m. after a caller reported seeing flames coming from one of the home’s upstairs windows. When officers arrived, they found an upstairs room in the back of the house was engulfed in flames

Officers quickly set up an exterior attack line and began fighting the fire. Officers then began to fight the blaze from the interior of the home and extinguished the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Escanaba Public Safety was assisted by the Ford River Volunteer Fire Department, Escanaba Electric Department, Escanaba Water Department, Rampart, DTE, the Red Cross and the Delta County Central Dispatch Center.
