Annual Young Trappers Workshop in Hermansville Saturday

HERMANSVILLE–The Hermansville Community Club will be the site of the 18th Annual Trappers Workshop for beginning (and experienced) trappers. This event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 4 from 8 a.m. through approximately 4 p.m. CST. There will be a number of local veteran trappers on hand sharing tips, techniques, stories and secrets of the sport of fur harvesting.

Along with all the experienced trappers on hand, this event will also feature trapping demonstrations by Jim Fornetti (weasels/ermine) John Gunville (general information on getting started on many fur bearers) and Bob Steinmetz (beavers). These demonstrators will engage the audience and encourage questions and dialogue. They will be stressing the legal, humane methods of harvest, safety on the trapline, sportsmanship in the woods, and the enjoyment of being outdoors.

Admission is free; food and refreshments will be available. There will also be many free items, raffles, guaranteed door prizes, and each participant will be gifted a trapping startup kit. Age-appropriate kits include all supplies needed for weasel, raccoon, and muskrat harvest. Older kids will have the opportunity to build their own muskrat colony traps. Also, personnel will be available with the opportunity for people to sign up to become members of U.P. Trappers and/or National Trappers Association.

“This workshop is a great event,” said Chuck Stepniak, longtime member of U. P. Trappers. “It is held in timely fashion when weasels are prime, so the younger kids (receiving weasel trapping kits) can start trapping weasels shortly after they leave the workshop Also, the National Trappers Convention will be held in Escanaba this summer; I am sure that many kids will take their interest to the next level by attending this huge event. A big thanks goes out to all the volunteers who put this event on and to all the individuals and businesses who donate the prizes.”
