Stabbing being investigated by Michigan State Police
NEWBERRY — A man has been arrested on an assault charge stemming from a Saturday stabbing incident in Newberry, the Michigan State Police Sault Ste. Marie post reported.
MSP said that at about 2 a.m. Saturday, troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie Post were dispatched to the village of Newberry on a report of an assault involving a female victim who was stabbed several times. Troopers arrived on the scene and contacted the 36-year-old victim, who is from Newberry.
The victim received extensive injuries from the assault. She was transported to the hospital by EMS for medical treatment, and currently is in stable condition.
The investigation revealed the suspect was a 24-year-old man from Florida and boyfriend of the victim. Prior to the troopers arriving at the scene, the man fled the residence on foot. Members of the MSP Canine Unit and the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team were requested and responded to assist with locating the suspect.
The man was later located hiding in a nearby residence and subsequently taken into custody. He was lodged in the Luce County Jail on charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, and resisting and obstructing.
The suspect’s name is being withheld pending arraignment.
