DATA millages pass
ESCANABA — Three townships weighed in on local proposals during Tuesday’s general election.
All three townships — Bark River, Bay de Noc Township and Escanaba Township — were asked to renew 0.5 mills (50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value) previously levied to support the services of the Delta Ar÷ea Transit Authority (DATA) within their borders for the next five years.
All three townships renewed the millage.
In Bark River, the proposal passed with 435 voters (60%) voting for the millage and 292 voters (40%) voting against it. The millage will raise $22,188.98 in the first year levied.
For Bay de Noc Township, voters renewed the millage, with 143 voters (63%) voting for the millage and 84 voters (37%) voting rejecting it. The millage will raise $14,901.19 in the first year levied.
In Escanaba Township, 717 voters (57%) voted to approve the millage. The remaining 537 voters (43%) voted to reject it. In the first year levied, the proposal will raise $60,943.16.
Bark River Township residents had a second proposal on their ballot, a request for 1.5 mills ($1.50 per $1,000 of taxable value) for a period of five years (2023 to 2027, inclusive) to provide funds for the township’s fire department. The proposal passed, with 448 voters (61%) voting to approve the millage and 228 voters (31%) voting to reject it.
The funds will be used to support both the fire department’s operations and the purchase of fire equipment and is expected to collect $66,000 in the first year.
