ONTONAGON -- Following a two month investigation, detectives from UPSET (Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team) arrested a 31-year-old man from Chippewa Falls, Wis. and a 30-year-old woman from Hancock after a traffic stop near Bergland.
UPSET detectives had developed information the suspects had been bringing in large quantities of methamphetamine to Hancock for several months. Detectives were able to determine that they were traveling back from Minneapolis, Minn. on October 20 and set up surveillance to locate the vehicle. The vehicle was located on M-28 near Wakefield and a traffic stop was conducted by the MSP Hometown Security Team near Bergland, along with troopers from the Calumet and Wakefield Post.
While attempting to stop the vehicle, troopers observed the man throw something from the passenger window. Detectives along with an MSP K-9 were able to recover a package that contained a large quantity of methamphetamine.
The woman was lodged at the Gogebic County Jail on several outstanding warrants and the man was transported to the Houghton County Jail on separate warrants. The case is being reviewed by the Ontonagon County Prosecutor's office and charges of Possession With Intent to Delivery Methamphetamine, 20 year felony, are expected.
