Social media profile prompts school closure
MANISTIQUE — School was closed in Manistique Friday following the discovery of a suspicious social media profile.
Manistique Public Safety was made aware of the suspicious profile, which was thought to be linked to students at Manistique Middle and High School, on Thursday. Some details of the profile caused safety concerns, which led to an immediate investigation using both local and federal resources, according to a press release issued by Manistique Public Safety Friday.
The police department worked with Manistique Area Schools administration and cancelled all activities Thursday and school Friday. The decision to cancel activities and close the school was made to guarantee the safety of both students and school employees while the investigation was ongoing.
The investigation ultimately showed there was no real or perceived threat to any staff or student at Manistique Area Schools at any time. The safety concerns stemmed from what the department described as “the negligent use of technology and social media venues.”
