Man killed when roof rack pierces windshield

SENEY — A Colorado man was killed Sunday when a roof rack from another vehicle pierced his windshield and struck him, Michigan State Police at Manistique said.

The incident occurred at approximately 1 p.m. Sunday. Troopers from the Manistique Outpost responded to a vehicle crash on M-28 near mile marker 203 in Seney Township. A Chevrolet pickup was heading eastbound driven by Matthew Morgrette, 31, of Colorado. A Honda passenger car was approaching heading west. The westbound Honda was carrying a kayak on a roof rack. The kayak and rack came loose as the vehicles approached at which time the rack struck the oncoming Chevrolet pickup.

The roof rack pierced the windshield and struck the driver causing a fatal injury to Morgrette. The deceased driver was traveling with his wife. She was not injured in this incident. The kayak struck a third vehicle which was traveling behind the Chevrolet pickup, causing minor damage but no injuries.

The Honda passenger car was being driven by a 58-year-old man from Wisconsin. He was not injured during this crash. The crash remains under investigation and will be forwarded to the Schoolcraft County prosecutor for review once completed.

Troopers were assisted by Alger County Sheriffs Department, Seney First Responders, and Alger County EMS. A portion on M-28 was closed during the investigation.
