HANCOCK -- A Hancock Township woman was found dead following an explosion and fire at a home on M-203.
The fire was reported around 9 a.m. Tuesday. When firefighters arrived on the scene the structure was fully engulfed.
They learned that the 64-year-old female resident of the home was unaccounted for.
A person fitting her description was found deceased inside the residence.
A male resident was able to escape the home and was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium where he was treated for his injuries and released.
The woman's name is being withheld pending autopsy and identification. The cause of the explosion and fire are still under investigation.
The Houghton County Sheriff's office was assisted by the Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit, Calumet Township Fire, Quincy Franklin Fire, Allouez Township Fire, Hubbell Fire, Tamarack City Fire, Mercy EMS, REA Power, MJO Contracting, Superior Search and Rescue and the Houghton County Medical Examiner's Office.
The sheriff's office thanked all of the volunteers and local businesses for providing food and water to responders on the scene.
