ESCANABA -- The top steers that were chosen Tuesday at the U.P. State Fair.
Isobel Miller, of Negaunee, raised Ralphy, the pick for Grand Champion Market Steer. The 1,365-pound cross bred by Miller took home the top title of Grand Champion Market Steer.
Joining Miller in the beef barn arena was Griffyn Verbeek, of Delta County, with the steer he raised, Zeke -- Reserve Champion Market Steer. Zeke, who was bred by Pam and Craig Vincent, tipped the scales at 1,362 pounds -- only three pounds shy of Ralphy. Zeke was also recognized by judges, taking home the title of Reserve Champion Market Steer.
The two steers will spend much of the rest of the fair in special pens in the beef barn, where fairgoers can see the animals for themselves, up close and personal.
