COVID cases steady in local area

ESCANABA — Local data Wednesday showed COVID-19 activity in the area has remained level in the past seven days, with Menominee County recording 27 and Delta County 26 new confirmed positives.

Menominee County also had 34 probable coronavirus positives and Delta County 27 since Aug. 3, according to figures posted on the Public Health of Delta and Menominee Counties website Wednesday. Neither county reported a new virus-related death.

The PHDM website Wednesday had Delta County at 8,453 confirmed positives, 2,524 probable cases and 163 deaths since the pandemic began. Menominee County has had 4,296 confirmed positives, 1,910 probables and 68 deaths. The deaths included confirmed and probable.

On the state level, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday added 336 confirmed positives since Aug. 2 to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 55 in Marquette County, 54 in Houghton County, 40 in Dickinson County, 35 in Iron County, 25 in Chippewa County, 22 in Delta County, 18 in Schoolcraft and Ontonagon counties, 16 in Gogebic County, 13 in Menominee and Baraga counties, 10 in Mackinac County, seven in Luce County, six in Keweenaw County and four in Alger County. The state listed only one new virus-related death, in Chippewa County.

Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 57,219 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 882 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 539 confirmed cases and 61 probable, and 12 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 715 confirmed cases and 848 probable, 14 confirmed deaths and two probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,029 confirmed, 118 probable and 37 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,156 confirmed, 745 probable and eight deaths, seven probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,183 confirmed cases and 775 probable, 13 deaths and three probable; Mackinac County, 1,792 confirmed cases and 919 probable, 28 deaths and four probable; Baraga County, 1,907 confirmed cases, 376 probable and 53 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,615 confirmed cases and 364 probable, 71 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,159 confirmed cases and 590 probable, 42 deaths and 30 probable; Chippewa County, 3,816 confirmed cases and 5,523 probable, and 91 deaths, 17 probable; Menominee County, 4,273 confirmed cases, 1,888 probable and 62 deaths, 12 probable; Dickinson County, 5,458 confirmed cases and 2,655 probable, 92 deaths and 23 probable; Houghton County, 7,551 confirmed cases, 1,180 probable, 91 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 8,428 confirmed cases and 2,507 probable, 137 deaths and 27 probable; and Marquette County, 13,598 confirmed cases, 3,563 probable and 131 deaths, 11 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Tuesday had 16,137 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Aug. 2, or an average of about 2,305 cases per day for the week, for a total of 2,708,622 cases since COVID tracking began. The state for that time period added 137 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 37,671.
