ESCANABA — Tuesday, March 29 was dedicated in 2017 as a day to honor the men and women who served and sacrificed during the Vietnam War. Locally, Vietnam veterans were honored at an event held at the Delta County Chamber of Commerce on March 29 this year.

Gayle DeShambo, account executive with UP Health System Hospice, reached out to the community for support to thank Vietnam veterans and their fellow veterans for their service. According to DeShambo, over 125 veterans and guests attended the event that was hosted by the Delta County Chamber of Commerce. With the help of friends and co-workers, veterans were served a picnic lunch supported by Luft Insurance Company and UP Health Systems Hospice and were taken on tours of the Upper Peninsula Military Museum coordinated by Dennis Moberg.

DeShambo also talked briefly about hospice and the need for volunteers — particularly veteran to veteran volunteers. “When our team cares for a veteran at end of life it is so important to bring them together with other vets who have had similar experiences to understand common thoughts and feelings. Knowing this, I extend another invitation to those reading this article to consider veteran or non-veteran to consider being a hospice volunteer where you will have an opportunity to make a difference in a friend or neighbor’s final days,” DeShambo said.

For more information or to sign up to be a volunteer call the agency office at 906-212-4933.
