POWERS — Wilson Creek Cafe in Powers has exceeded its fundraising goal to help Ukrainian refugees.

A total of $20,419 was raised for the World Central Kitchen.

The non-profit organization estimates that for every $50 donated, 10 meals are made available to those affected by Russia’s military invasion.

“What this means is that with these funds donated you have helped us feed 4,084 people in need of a warm meal,” said owner Chad Sydor, whose family has Ukrainian roots.

The Menominee County cafe hosted a Ukrainian feast on March 28, serving more than 1,200 meals that raised $17,492 alone. They served three of their family’s traditional dishes including holubchi, cabbage rolls smothered with a smoked Polish sausage gravy; vereniki, known as pierogies locally; and the beet soup borscht.

Since the event, the community has continued to show support with more donations.

Sydor stressed the feast wouldn’t have been possible without the help from their staff and 23 volunteers who stepped up.

“We really appreciate all the love and support from the community,” he said. “Words cannot thank you enough for your amazing generosity.”

Anyone wishing to donate to the World Central Kitchen can go to the Wilson Creek Cafe Facebook page and go to WCK website at https://wck.org/.

Starting at $3.50/week.
