Uptick in COVID-19 cases slight

ESCANABA -- Local data Friday showed a slight uptick in COVID-19 activity in the area, with 13 new confirmed positives in Menominee County and 10 in Delta County since Wednesday.

But the probable case count went down by five in Menominee County and by three in Delta County for the two-day period, according to the Public Health of Delta and Menominee Counties website Friday. Neither county added a death blamed on the virus.

The PHDM on Friday had Delta County at 7,874 confirmed positives, 2,045 probable cases and 154 deaths since the pandemic began. Menominee County has had 3,884 confirmed positives, 1,693 probables and 63 deaths. The deaths included confirmed and probable.

At the state level, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Friday added 76 more confirmed positives in the Upper Peninsula since Wednesday: 13 in Marquette County; 11 in Delta, Menominee and Houghton counties; six in Mackinac County; five in Alger County; four in Chippewa and Gogebic counties; three in Schoolcraft County; two in Dickinson, Luce, Ontonagon and Baraga counties; and one in Iron County; Keweenaw County's count was reduced by one. The only change in deaths was to remove one from Marquette County's toll.

Using only the MDHHS numbers, the Upper Peninsula as of Friday has had 50,953 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 812 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Friday had Keweenaw County at 450 confirmed cases and 53 probable, and 12 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 657 confirmed cases and 763 probable, nine confirmed deaths and one probable death; Ontonagon County, 867 confirmed, 104 probable and 34 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,048 confirmed, 659 probable and eight deaths, five probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,079 confirmed cases and 669 probable, 13 deaths and three probable; Mackinac County, 1,538 confirmed cases and 834 probable, 27 deaths and two probable; Baraga County, 1,708 confirmed cases, 319 probable and 51 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,299 confirmed cases and 338 probable, 70 deaths and 16 probable; Gogebic County, 2,721 confirmed cases and 522 probable, 39 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 3,361 confirmed cases and 5,049 ­probable, and 82 deaths, 17 probable; Menominee County, 3,876 confirmed cases, 1,689 probable and 60 deaths, nine probable; Dickinson County, 4,984 confirmed cases and 2,378 probable, 85 deaths and 22 probable; Houghton County, 6,648 confirmed cases, 1,077 probable, 78 deaths and 11 probable; Delta County, 7,865 confirmed cases and 2,039 probable, 130 deaths and 24 probable; and Marquette County, 11,852 confirmed cases, 3,026 probable and 114 deaths, 10 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Friday had 1,819 new confirmed coronavirus positives in Michigan since Wednesday, or an average of about 910 per day for the two-day period, for a total to date of 2,065,912. The state since Wednesday added 45 deaths attributed to the virus -- including 38 that occurred earlier but were recently verified through a vital records review -- to reach 32,419.
