Motorcyclist killed in crash with pickup

SANDS TOWNSHIP — A motorcyclist is dead following a crash with a pickup truck Wednesday night in Sands Township.

At approximately 10:51 p.m. Wednesday, deputies from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to County Road 480 near Pelissier Lake Road in Sands Township for a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck. A deputy arrived at the scene within two minutes of the initial call, and with the assistance of the public, began attempting life-saving measures on the motorcycle driver. The life saving measures were unsucessful and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorcycle was driven by a local Skandia man, while the other vehicle, a Dodge pickup truck, was driven by a Dickinson County man. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. The incident remains under investigation and no further information about the incident is being released at this time.

While deputies were conducting a crash investigation, a second crash occurred when another vehicle failed to stop for the emergency vehicles blocking the scene. A passenger car struck a Sands Twp. Emergency Fire pickup truck while emergency lights were flashing on the vehicle, which was positioned to protect first responders. The second crash was investigated by the Michigan State Police, and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the second crash.
