Region sees decrease in virus cases
ESCANABA — State data Saturday had eight new confirmed positives in Delta County, plus three in Schoolcraft County and only one in Menominee County.
Both the region and state saw significant decreases in the number of new positives Saturday, with Michigan having 933 fewer cases and the Upper Peninsula 23 less than Friday’s tally.
For the U.P., the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ coronavirus website Saturday added 35 new confirmed positives: the eight in Delta County; five in Chippewa County; four in Dickinson and Marquette counties; three in Schoolcraft, Houghton and Mackinac counties; two in Gogebic County; and one each in Menominee, Iron and Luce counties. The only new coronavirus-related death was recorded in Dickinson County.
Using only the state’s figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Saturday has had 19,485 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 417 deaths.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Saturday had Keweenaw County at 142 confirmed cases and 31 probable, and one confirmed death and one probable death; Luce County, 187 confirmed cases and 208 probable, one confirmed death and one probable death; Schoolcraft County, 320 confirmed cases and 66 probable, four deaths and one probable; Alger County, 319 confirmed, 188 probable and two deaths, four probable; Ontonagon County, 399 confirmed, 57 probable and 20 deaths, one probable; Mackinac County, 411 confirmed cases and 229 probable, three deaths; Baraga County, 619 confirmed cases, 118 probable and 36 deaths; Iron County, 958 confirmed cases and 66 probable, 42 deaths and nine probable; Gogebic County, 1,014 confirmed cases and 360 probable, 22 deaths and 28 probable; Chippewa County, 1,051 confirmed cases and 1,368 probable, and 28 deaths, five probable; Menominee County, 1,759 confirmed cases, 319 probable and 39 deaths, two probable; Dickinson County, 2,370 confirmed cases and 326 probable, 59 deaths and 15 probable; Houghton County, 2,475 confirmed cases, 602 probable, 32 deaths and eight probable; Delta County, 3,273 confirmed cases and 658 probable, 71 deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 4,188 confirmed cases, 796 probable and 57 deaths, one probable. State numbers are updated almost daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.
The MDHHS on Saturday posted 1,825 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan for a total to date of 862,633. The state Saturday had 122 deaths attributed to the virus — including 83 that happened earlier but recently were verified through vital records and testing, according to the MDHHS — to reach 18,206.
The state no longer updates its virus figures on Sundays.
