Virus cases continue to climb locally

The number of new COVID-19 positives in the Upper Peninsula topped 100 on Friday, reflecting a statewide surge of coronavirus activity in Michigan.

Locally, state COVID-19 data Friday added 18 more confirmed cases in Delta County, five more in Menominee County and three in Schoolcraft County.

For the U.P., the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ coronavirus website Friday listed 102 new confirmed positives: 29 in Marquette County; the 18 in Delta County; 10 in Dickinson, Houghton and Chippewa counties; six in Mackinac County; five in Menominee and Gogebic County; three in Schoolcraft and Keweenaw counties; and one each in Iron, Luce and Alger counties. Only Baraga and Ontonagon counties had no change.

Using only the state’s figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Friday has had 17,771 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 400 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Friday had Keweenaw County at 128 confirmed cases and 31 probable, and one confirmed death and one probable death; Luce County, 149 confirmed cases and 148 probable, one probable death; Schoolcraft County, 272 confirmed cases and 50 probable, four deaths and one probable; Alger County, 294 confirmed, 173 probable and one death, four probable; Mackinac County, 343 confirmed cases and 192 probable, three deaths; Ontonagon County, 378 confirmed, 56 probable and 20 deaths, one probable; Baraga County, 524 confirmed cases, 110 probable and 33 deaths; Iron County, 890 confirmed cases and 62 probable, 42 deaths and nine probable; Chippewa County, 913 confirmed cases and 1,243 probable, and 25 deaths, five probable; Gogebic County, 982 confirmed cases and 357 probable, 22 deaths and 28 probable; Menominee County, 1,673 confirmed cases, 290 probable and 39 deaths, two probable; Dickinson County, 2,233 confirmed cases and 271 probable, 55 deaths and 16 probable; Houghton County, 2,331 confirmed cases, 568 probable, 32 deaths and eight probable; Delta County, 2,894 confirmed cases and 540 probable, 68 deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 3,767 confirmed cases, 690 probable and 55 deaths, one probable. State numbers are updated almost daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Friday posted 7,834 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan for a total of 731,131. The state added 26 new deaths to reach 16,426.
