Marquette leads U.P. in new virus cases

ESCANABA — State health data Thursday showed 17 more confirmed COVID-19 positives in Delta County for a second straight day, but the county did not lead the Upper Peninsula in new cases.

Marquette County saw a jump of 34 more positives as the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ coronavirus website Thursday recorded 84 new confirmed cases in the region’s 15 counties.

Along with the confirmed positives in Marquette and Delta counties, the MDHHS site listed seven new cases in Iron and Chippewa counties; five in Houghton County; four in Baraga County; three in Schoolcraft, Dickinson and Mackinac counties; and one in Keweenaw County. The state also had new deaths in Dickinson, Mackinac and Baraga counties.

Using only the state’s figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Thursday has had 19,057 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 412 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Thursday had Keweenaw County at 142 confirmed cases and 31 probable, and one confirmed death and one probable death; Luce County, 174 confirmed cases and 178 probable, one confirmed death and one probable death; Schoolcraft County, 296 confirmed cases and 58 probable, four deaths and one probable; Alger County, 307 confirmed, 187 probable and two deaths, four probable; Mackinac County, 392 confirmed cases and 224 probable, four deaths; Ontonagon County, 397 confirmed, 56 probable and 20 deaths, one probable; Baraga County, 565 confirmed cases, 113 probable and 34 deaths; Iron County, 939 confirmed cases and 65 probable, 42 deaths and nine probable; Gogebic County, 1,001 confirmed cases and 360 probable, 22 deaths and 28 probable; Chippewa County, 1,024 confirmed cases and 1,342 probable, and 27 deaths, five probable; Menominee County, 1,733 confirmed cases, 312 probable and 39 deaths, two probable; Dickinson County, 2,346 confirmed cases and 319 probable, 58 deaths in Mar quette County, 4,104 confirmed cases, 783 probable and 57 deaths, one probable. State numbers are updated almost daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Thursday posted 3,623 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan for a total to date of 837,514. The state Thursday recorded 109 deaths attributed to the virus — including 78 that happened earlier but recently were verified through vital records and testing, according to the MDHHS — to reach 17,576.ths and 16 probable; Houghton County, 2,438 confirmed cases, 594 probable, 32 deaths and eight probable; Delta County, 3,199 confirmed cases and 630 probable, 69 deaths and 19 probable; and Mar-
