Man arrested after leaving scene of crash

ESCANABA — A man who left the scene of an crash that severed an electrical pole was arrested after police searched the area for him. Tips from residents and a drone were used to aid the search, Escanaba Public Safety officers said.

The incident occurred Wednesday at 2:07 p.m. on the 1300 block of Willow Creek Road. Escanaba Public Safety officers responded to a report of a vehicle that had struck an electrical pole. The driver had fled the scene of the accident. The vehicle sheered the electrical pole off and the truck and wires were holding it up. Officers, along with the assistance of EPSD K-9, MSP K-9 and the Delta County Sheriff Department, tracked the suspect with the use of a drone. The public also assisted officers by notifying them of observing the suspect in the area. The suspect was located near Menards and was taken into custody by Escanaba Public Safety and was ultimately lodged at the Delta County jail on multiple charges. There were no serious injuries to the driver of the suspect vehicle.

Willow Creek Rd was shutdown to through traffic while the Escanaba City Electric Department was replacing the electrical pole.

“Escanaba Public Safety Department would like to thank Delta County Central Dispatch, Escanaba City Electric, Escanaba Public Works Department, Delta County Sheriff Department, Michigan State Police, DTE, Spectrum Communications, Gene’s Towing and the Escanaba City Engineering Department for their assistance,” the department stated in a press release.
