ESCANABA -- Residents with live Christmas Trees to dispose of can drop them off at no charge, 24/7 in any of three locations:
-- Behind the bandshell in Ludington Park
-- By Lemmer Elementary School, off of 8th Avenue South in Escanaba
-- At the east side of the Delta County Landfill and Recycle center at 5701 19th Avenue, Escanaba.
Trees can be dropped off with their branches attached or removed. If dropped off without branches, the landfill prefers that the wood be at or below six feet in length, and as close to a maximum diameter of three inches as possible. This is a basic rule, however, said landfill manager Don Pyle. They understand that some trees are a bit larger in diameter.
While Pyle said that it's fine to drop off a tree with all of its branches, it is important to remove all lights, ornaments and as much tinsel as possible before dropping it off. As to how long a tree can be kept in the home before becoming a fire hazard, Pyle said that while he's not an expert, when a tree is showing signs of drying out--such as dropping needles--it's a good idea to drop it off.
Those who have artificial Christmas trees they wish to dispose of can do so at the landfill during normal open hours. Pyle said the person at the scale will provide instructions, noting that there is a charge for the disposal of artificial trees.
