Manistique man killed in motorcycle crash

HIAWATHA TOWNSHIP — A Manistique man was killed in a motorcycle crash Saturday evening.

At about 9 p.m., a motorcycle driven by Markie Sumter, 52, of Manistique was northbound on State Road near M-94 in Hiawatha Township. Sumter lost control of the motorcycle, left the roadway and struck a tree.

According to Michigan State Police at the Manistique Outpost, Sumter died of his injuries at the scene. He was the only person on the motorcycle, and no other vehicles were involved.

At the time of the crash, Sumter was not wearing a helmet. Other factors believed to have played a role in the incident include alcohol and speed.

Michigan State Police Manistique Outpost and Gladstone Post troopers investigating the crash were assisted on scene by personnel from Manistique Public Safety, Sault Tribal Police Department and Hiawatha Township Fire Department.
