Two rescued on island off Garden Peninsula

ST. MARTIN ISLAND — Two people were rescued by Delta County Marine Patrol after being stranded on an island near the Garden Peninsula Monday.

On Monday, July 6 at about 8:20 p.m., Delta County Marine Patrol was dispatched to St. Martin Island. A 34-year-old Powers man and his 12-year-old nephew who were out on the water had attempted to avoid an incoming storm before sheltering on the northeast side of the island. However, as they attempted to avoid the storm, their boat became disabled and began to take on water.

Marine Patrol located both subjects and transported them back to the Escanaba Yacht Harbor. Though they were cold and wet, both were safe at the time of the rescue.
