New owners, new ideas at Great North Auto Wash

ESCANABA — Though it is now under new management, Great North Auto Wash has continued to meet the car-washing needs of local residents.

Cory Kuchenberg, who co-owns Great North Auto Wash along with Neil Aaberg, said he and Aaberg took ownership of the business last year.

“We purchased this from Jeff McCall in January of 2019,” he said.

McCall, the auto wash’s original owner, established it in 1992.

According to Kuchenberg, one of the main reasons he and Aaberg decided to buy Great North Auto Wash was that people living in the Escanaba area held positive opinions of the business.

“It’s got a great reputation in town,” he said.

He also said he enjoys working there.

“Honestly, it’s a fun business to be in,” Kuchenberg said.

Today, Great North Auto Wash offers a variety of car wash options, ranging from a basic car wash to “The Works.” Kuchenberg said the latter option includes rust inhibitor sealant, triple-foam polishes and Rain-X surface protectant.

The auto wash does not offer services outside of its car washes.

“We don’t detail vehicles — it’s a full-service tunnel wash, is what it is,” Kuchenberg said.

Currently, Great North Auto Wash employs seven people, not including Kuchenberg or Aaberg. Kuchenberg thanked his employees for their hard work.

“We’ve got a great employee base here,” he said.

Great North Auto Wash’s employees — particularly the attendants working there — play an important role in distinguishing it from other car washes in the area, Kuchenberg said.

“Our attendants are what set us apart from everybody else,” he said.

The auto wash’s attendants are responsible for spraying off and brushing cars before they go through the wash itself.

When Kuchenberg and McCall took over Great North Auto Wash, they introduced a fundraising program. Through the program, schools and organizations have been able to raise funds by selling auto wash certificates.

“That’s been very popular,” Kuchenberg said of the program.

In the future, Kuchenberg said Great North Auto Wash is looking to enhance its facility.

“We have plans to brighten up our tunnel with new lights and … different soaps and (polishes),” he said.

The business is planning to introduce other improvements within the next two years, as well.

“We also have aspirations … to build self-service bays for our customers that don’t fit in our tunnel,” Kuchenberg said.
