Opportunity to help Cancer Alliance in today’s paper

ESCANABA — Delta County residents — who have frequently shown their support for the Delta County Cancer Alliance over the years — can step forward again.

The 24th annual fundraiser envelope is included in today’s edition of the Daily Press. The goldenrod-colored envelopes provide one of the major avenues for fundraising by the entirely volunteer organization comprised of county residents.

Since its inception in 1995, DCCA has provided more than $1 million to more than 4,000 cancer patients in Delta County. All cancer patients are eligible for $500 annually to help cover transportation for treatment, medication and medical supplies, appliances and other needs.

DCCA operates a loan closet that provides wheel chairs, commodes, canes, lift chairs, wigs, shower chairs, bedside tables, Ensure, Depends and other supplies at no charge.

The popular Women Helping Women program for patients with breast cancer is one of the most well known, used and respected programs in the region and is endorsed by area hospitals and doctors.

The organization also offers various supplies and equipment at no charge for women who have had masectomies.

A cancer support group meets the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at the DCCA office, 3430 Ludington St., Escanaba. The group is for family members, friends and anyone else wishing to assist with emotional support to a cancer patient.

The envelope campaign is one of three major fund-raisers conducted for DCCA. The annual Golfing for Cancer four-player scramble will be held July 11 at Escanaba Country Club, a survivor walk/luminary is held in August in Ludington Park as part of the City of Escanaba’s weekly band concerts.

The DCCA does not make any telephone solicitations or conduct door-to-door campaigns.

All funds raised are provided to Delta County cancer patients.

For details, call DCCA at 786-0854 or DCCA President Cheri Severinsen at 786-1365. Volunteer board members include Sally Erkkila, Patt Fittante, Mary Pat Johnson, John Economopolous, Dennis Grall, Amy Johnson, Jane Pryal.
