Jim’s Music keeps in tune with the community

ESCANABA — Escanaba music store Jim’s Music & Teaching Center has been offering music-related products and services for decades, and the business is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.

Jim’s Music’s history began with the opening of its Escanaba store in 1986. It was founded by Jim Dombrowski.

“He was teaching at another music store … and then the store closed, and he wanted to continue,” Tyler Henderson, the manager of the Escanaba store, said.

Dombrowski, who still owns the business today, went on to establish additional Jim’s Music stores elsewhere in the Upper Midwest.

“He opened three other following locations years later,” Henderson said.

These stores are located in Iron Mountain, Marquette and Green Bay.

Today, Jim’s Music focuses on services and sales. According to Henderson, the latter category includes “basically anything musical,” including instruments and accessories. Items not available in the store can be specially ordered, as well.

One popular service offered by Jim’s Music is instrument repair.

“We do have a full-time luthier that works here,” Henderson said.

Music lessons are another important part of business at Jim’s Music. Lessons for guitar, percussion, ukulele, band instruments and vocals are taught at the store, among others.

Henderson said business has been strong for the Jim’s Music store in Escanaba.

“Every few years, it seems like … we’re carrying more inventory,” he said.

The most recent boost to the store’s product line-up came from the ongoing ukulele craze.

“About five years ago, we’d carry two of them or three of them for Christmas,” Henderson said of the store’s ukulele selection.

Today, the store has about 50 ukuleles for sale at all times.

Going forward, Jim’s Music is aiming to increase participation in its music lessons.

“We’re trying to get more students in here — more of the youth of the community,” Henderson said.

He said the store will also work to keep local schools’ band and orchestra programs strong.

Henderson thanked shoppers in the area for their support.

“We appreciate all the business that we get,” he said.
