Wisconsin man dies in one-vehicle crash

STAMBAUGH TOWNSHIP — A Wisconsin man was killed in a one-vehicle crash in Iron County’s Stambaugh Township Sunday.

At about 12:20 a.m., Michigan State Police, Iron Mountain Post troopers responded to a one-vehicle personal injury crash at the intersection of Federal Forest Highway 16 and Smokey Lake Road. An investigation found the pickup involved in the crash, operated by Verne St. Pierre, 64, of Phelps, Wis., left the roadway and crashed into several trees.

St. Pierre was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Aspirus Hospital in Iron River, where he later died.

At the scene, St. Pierre had told troopers he had fallen asleep. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, and alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the incident.

Iron County Sheriff Department, West Iron County Fire Department, Iron County Search and Rescue, Aspirus EMS, Phelps EMS and Northland Towing assisted at the scene.
