Police save man from burning home

MANISTIQUE — A Manistique man escaped injury after he was rescued from a burning home Wednesday.

Manistique Public Safety and volunteer firefighters were called to 217 New Elm St., Manistique, after a report of a house on fire with a person inside at 1:23 p.m. Wednesday.

Upon arrival on scene, officers observed heavy smoke billowing from the rear of the home with the occupant, Todd Lalonde, 53, visible from a window in the southeast rear side of the home.

Firefighters immediately entered the burning home and brought Lalonde out. Officers said Lalonde was checked for injuries by Manistique EMS.

Once Lalonde was out of the home, officers were able to bring the blaze under control in a short time.

Officers said the home is owned by Tom and Brenda Smith of Manistique and was being rented by Lalonde.

The inside of the home suffered heavy smoke and fire damage and may be considered a total loss, according to Manistique Public Safety.

There were no injuries reported.

Officers said an investigation determined Lalonde was cooking on a portable propane stove that got out of control, which started the fire on the east side of the home.

The Manistique Ministerial Association and Schoolcraft County Chapter of the Red Cross were contacted to assist Lalonde, who lost all his belongings in the fire.
