Escanaba man killed in work zone accident

GRAND RAPIDS — An Escanaba man working in Grand Rapids was hit and killed in a traffic accident, according to the Grand Rapids Police Department.

Ronald Hughes, 60, of Escanaba, was subcontracted to do line work in Grand Rapids. At about 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, he and another individual were setting up lane closure barricades for a construction zone. As Hughes was returning to his work truck, a four-door sedan traveling westbound on Hall Street SW over US 131 hit Hughes and the truck.

Hughes was propelled more than 50 feet eastward as a result of the crash. A press release issued by the Grand Rapids Police Department stated Hughes received “grievous” injuries; while first aid was attempted, he died at the scene.

The vehicle that struck Hughes stopped about 100 feet from the crash site. The driver remained on scene and was extensively questioned by officers. The name of the driver will not be released until charges are filed.

Speed was believed to be a factor in the incident.
