Details of fatal auto accident released

HOLMES TOWNSHIP -- A fatal three-vehicle accident that occurred Monday afternoon in Menominee County will result in charges for the Stephenson man who caused the crash, according to authorities.

Menominee County Sheriff's Department deputies were called to a three-vehicle accident near the intersection of County Road 356 and County Road 577 in Holmes Township Monday at 1:36 p.m. CST.

The three vehicles were driven by Croy Smith, 36, of Niagra, Wis., Perry Keller, 59, of Daggett, and a 19-year-old Stephenson man. All drivers had passengers in their vehicles.

Derek Bryant, 29, of Vulcan, was thrown from his vehicle and died as a result of his injuries.

According to the sheriff's office, the 19-year-old Stephenson man caused the collision by disregarding a stop sign at the intersection. He was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs causing death. Due to his life-threatening injuries, he was given a $50,000 personal recognizance bond and remains in the custody of a medical facility.

His name will not be released until his arraignment in Menominee County District Court.

Menominee County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Mid County Rescue and Extraction, Stephenson and Daggett Volunteer Fire Departments, Michigan State Police Accident Investigators, and the Menominee County Medical Examiner's Office.
