Person killed in Wells Twp. house fire

WELLS TOWNSHIP — An individual was killed in a house fire in Wells Township Thursday night.

At about 11:35 p.m., Delta County Central Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a possible barn fire at 6927 I.5 Lane in Wells Township. When Delta County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived on scene, they found the structure — which was fully engulfed in flames — was actually a two-story single-occupant residence. People living nearby were unsure if the dwelling’s lone occupant was still inside.

Escanaba Public Safety Department responded to the fire and requested mutual aid from the Escanaba Township Fire Department. Escanaba Township Fire Department supported Escanaba Public Safety with manpower and water-shuttling capabilities.

After the fire was under control, a search of the scene took place. Firefighters found the remains of an individual within the debris. The body was removed from the scene by fire personnel and Rampart EMS before being transported to the OSF HealthCare St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group morgue. No further information regarding the identity of the deceased is being released until a more positive identification can be made.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and no further information abut the blaze is being released at this time.

Responding departments were on scene for approximately four hours. Escanaba Public Safety was supported by Delta County Central Dispatch, Escanaba Township Volunteer Fire Department, Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Rampart EMS and the Delta County Medical Examiner’s Office.
