Engineering meets art

Artist Steve Bowles resets the star of his exhibit at the Bonifas Art Center Thursday, a piece named “Ruby.” The exhibit is titled “Of Both Minds: An Exhibit of Engineering Wonders and Artistic Beauty,” and is on display at the art center through Oct. 29. The mechanical sculpture is comprised of balls, croquette pieces, wheels, basketballs, a small bicycle, and other triggers. They create a domino effect that knocks down six bowling pins. Bowles created “Ruby” with 85 percent recycled material in just over a year. The piece is inspired by the fantasy machine drawings of Rube Goldberg, an American cartoonist, also known for drawing complicated gadgets performing simple tasks in roundabout ways.
