ESCANABA — After years of planning, the new Delta County Correctional Facility has officially opened for business.

Delta County announced the opening of the new correctional facility in a press release Monday. According to the press release, all inmates have been moved to the new facility from the previous facility, which was located near the Delta County Courthouse.

The move, which involved more than 100 individuals, took place on Friday, June 14 over the course of about 14 hours. The transition team was said to have had no major issues during this process.

“The inmate population move is a major milestone to reaching the finish line on this project. We are very grateful for the public support of this project and the leadership and hard work from our Delta County Sheriff Department,” said Delta County Administrator Philip Strom in the release.

However, some work still needs to be done at the new correctional facility. Strom said the work will include the final efforts to determine any construction issues or other operational concerns with the facility.

For the first week of the transition, visitation for the correctional facility’s inmate population has been suspended. This is being done to allow the staff to focus on safety and security while moving into the new facility. Visitation will resume later this month, and the sheriff’s department will provide a schedule for visitation.
