Esky Shopko store, others in UP to close

ESCANABA — Hundreds of Shopko stores — including the retail chain’s Escanaba store — are set to close in the coming months.

According to a list of Shopko store closings announced Wednesday, the Escanaba store’s estimated last day of operation will be May 12.

A Shopko store in Marquette is also expected to close on May 12, and a store in Houghton will likely close on May 5. Stores in L’Anse, Calumet and Marinette, Wis., were also included on the list of closures.

In January, Shopko Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, which it said was the result of excess debt and competitive pressure. At this time, the company announced the closure of 38 stores, in addition to 40 closures which had been announced in the previous month.

The company previously announced the closure of a U.P. Shopko Hometown store in Wetmore.

On Wednesday, news broke that the number of Shopko stores closing had increased to 250 — 70 percent of Shopko’s locations.

The Escanaba Shopko building is attached to the Delta Plaza Mall, and its closure will may leave an empty space there. The Delta Plaza plans to place a Hobby Lobby and a Marshalls store at the mall. Those plans do not include the Shopko building.
