Woman pleads no contest in home invasion

ESCANABA — A 19-year-old Escanaba woman pleaded to a lesser crime in court Tuesday after being charged with second-degree home invasion and three counts of assault and battery for breaking down the door to an Escanaba apartment and injuring three people earlier this year.

Brittany Nicole Caswell pleaded no contest to one count of third-degree home invasion, a five-year felony, during a hearing in Delta County Circuit Court. She entered a no contest plea because she could not recall the incident due to being under the influence of drugs at the time.

In exchange for the plea, the prosecution agreed to dismiss one count of second-degree home invasion (a 15-year felony), three counts of assault and battery (each a 93-day misdemeanor), and a habitual offender third offense notice in connection with the April 1, 2017 incident at a residence on the 1500 block of Sheridan Road.

According to Escanaba Public Safety, Caswell was upset about drugs when she assaulted three people and kicked in the door of an apartment, entering the residence without permission.

Following her arrest, she was lodged in jail in lieu of a $40,000 cash/surety bond. She was ordered to have no contact with the three victims and must not exhibit any assaultive or abusive behavior. She must also undergo random drug testing.

Caswell is scheduled to be sentenced in circuit court on July 9.
