Manistique student part of national spelling bee

Nora Cunningham

MANISTIQUE — A local seventh-grader competed in this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee. Nora Cunningham, a 13-year-old student at Manistique Middle and High School, was in the Washington, D.C. area for the competition this week.

Cunningham made it to Round Three of the spelling bee, which took place Wednesday. She was eliminated after missing the second ‘T’ in the word “noncommittal.” The spelling bee has been streaming online on ESPN3 Tuesday and Wednesday.

K-12 Dean of Students Rob Ryan said people in the area have been excited to watch Cunningham come this far.

“She’s a very bright, motivated girl, and the entire district is very proud of her,” Ryan said.

A total of 516 spellers have been involved with this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee — the largest number of competitors in the event’s history. The bee’s grand finals, which will be broadcast live on ESPN, are set to begin at 8:30 p.m. ET today.
