Family Fun Park closing its doors

Haley Gustafson | Daily Press The Family Fun Park is shown at its location in Escanaba Tuesday. The property, which featured adventure golf, bumper boats, and baseball batting cages, was sold last week to Peninsula Federal Credit Union.

ESCANABA — Family Fun Park, Inc., located at 2929 3rd Ave. North in Escanaba, was sold last week and will close its doors permanently. The property, which featured bumper boats, go-karts, and adventure golf, and baseball batting cages, was purchased by Peninsula Federal Credit Union, which plans to construct an office building there.

Elaine Mills, owner and operator of the park, said the sale was finalized last Friday.

Mills explained the park had been up for sale for some time, as she was looking at retirement.

“It was God’s perfect timing for the sale,” said Mills, adding it’s a relief it is finally sold, but also sad because of the countless memories that are left behind with the closure of the park.

A new Peninsula Federal Credit Union building will be constructed at the site. The current structures at Family Fun Park will be demolished.

Debbie Edwardsen, vice-president of innovation at Peninsula Federal Credit Union, said the building will be constructed sometime in the future.

“We will be expanding and building a new office there,” said Edwardsen, adding, as of now, there is no timeline when the new credit union will be built.

Edwardsen said the credit union chose the location because it is along 3rd Avenue North. Peninsula Federal Credit Union’s main branch is not far away, noted Edwardsen. The main branch is located at 301 N. 30th St., almost across the street from the Family Fun Park.

Mills and her late husband, Jerry, purchased the go-kart track at the park in 1990. Over the years, Mills said she and her husband expanded the park — adding a full miniature golf course, pool for bumper boats, and other activities. Mills’ husband died in 2003.

The Mills family operated the Family Fun Park for 28 summers, said Mills, adding that running the operation was truly a family affair.

“It was nice,” said Mills. “All of our kids got to work there and their friends.”

Mills said traditionally July was the park’s busiest time, with the end of summer coming and tourism peaking that month.

The announcement of the closure of the park has been posted on the Family Fun Park’s Facebook page, added Mills, noting another announcement will be made on the park’s official website.

Starting at $3.50/week.
