Body of missing Skandia Twp. resident found

MARQUETTE — The body of missing Skandia Township resident John Rowland was discovered at 10:39 a.m. Saturday in a wooded area north of the spot where his Chevrolet Astro van had been located earlier.

According to the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, a UH-60 Black Hawk Medevac helicopter from the Wisconsin Army National Guard, based out of West Bend, Wis., was used to locate Rowland about 15 minutes after arriving in the search area.

The van initially was found around 11:15 p.m. Feb. 24 on Forestville Road near Huron Woods Drive in Marquette Township.

Assisting in the air search was a Cessna 172 operated by volunteer members of the Civil Area Patrol based out of Houghton CMX Airport.

Rowland, 36, had been last seen in the city of Marquette at about 3:30 a.m. Feb. 23.

Rowland’s body was transported to the UP Health System-Marquette morgue by Marquette Township Fire and Rescue. An autopsy is expected to be performed this week.

The investigation is ongoing pending the autopsy results.
